Focal Theme
Towards Net Zero Emission: Approaches and Strategies

Net zero emissions by 2070 is a pivotal climate action committed by India in the COP26 summit held at Glasgow in 2021. It aims to achieve a zero or negative balance between the amount of greenhouse gas produced and the amount removed from the atmosphere. It is beyond ‘carbon neutral’ as it focusses on reducing carbon emissions as much as possible first, and only offsetting it as a last resort. It is a challenge for researchers to develop hitherto technologies compliance with net zero and evaluate the existing technologies for making modifications if required. Strategies for achieving net-zero include (i) deploying a wide portfolio of clean energy options (ii) sustainable management of nitrogen fertilizers, (iii) feeding and breeding technologies for reduced enteric methane, (iv) carbon dioxide removal technologies and (v) lifestyle for environment.
